USABIZ Award 2016

March 1, 2016

EV Group, SKIDATA and STEYR MOTORS are the Winners of the USABIZ AWARD 2016 (WirtschaftsOskar 2016) for top accomplishments on the US-market

2015 was a record year for Austrian-American economic relationships. „ For the first time in history the USA became the second most important export market for Austria. The US have been for some time one of its biggest transatlantic partners. The goal of the USABizAward (“WirtschaftsOskar” in German) is to highlight the often unknown accomplishments of single Austrian businesses in the ultra-competitive US-market and bring them on the red carpet“, says Los Angeles Trade Commissioner Rudolf Thaler, who lead the award ceremony on Thursday evening. This is already the sixth time this award has been presented by the Austrian Trade Commission in Los Angeles. What counts is innovation, success in the marketplace, and market presence. Thaler: „The winners of the USABizAward are ambassadors of Austria’s innovation and competitive capabilities. Niche-, technology-, and market leaders are the attributes used to characterize the winners of the USABizAward.

The winners of the 2016 USABizAward are...

In the category Spectacular: Steyr Motors GmbH

The upper-Austrian diesel motor manufacturer managed to secure a contract from the US-Navy to equip a fleet of 400 patrol boats in this highly competitive field. Steyr Motors won with their innovation: the motor start without water cooling, hybrid technology, and immediate usability, as well as an easy to use display. These high-tech motors are also trending in the commercial boating sector, due to their ability to use multiple types of fuel.

Other nominees were HEAD Sport GmbH, a world champion brand at the Ski World Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek. HEAD skis won the most medals there.

In the category Innovation: EV Group (EVG)

The upper-Austrian company is the technology and market leader for precision machinery, for silicon wafers and other substrates of the semiconductor industry, microsystem technology, and nanotechnology. Many renowned smart phone modules are produced with EVG machinery. Every four seconds a bonded wafer leaves an EVG machine. EVG was awarded the „Supplier of the year“ prize by the MEMS & Sensors Innovation Awards. North America accounts for almost ¼ of worldwide sales.

Other nominees were: ams AG, the number 1 in light sensors and smaXtec animal care sales GmbH, the market leader in creating data for dairy cows.

In the category Market Penetration: SKIDATA AG

The tech-leader from Salzburg, SKIDATA, is the number one for entry systems in the US. This record was reached in multiple market segments, such as for parking lots, airports, and ski lifts. SKIDATA installed 25 different solutions for loyalty programs in the NFL, NHL, and NBA, as well as parking systems for the Sacramento, Orlando, and Dallas airports, and obtained multiple contracts in renowned ski areas. In order to achieve this market position, SKIDATA bought two US companies, as well as parking technology from 3M and an R&D center in Dallas, Texas. The number of American employees went up to almost 200 and sales in the US increased by 150%.

Other nominees were: Bachmann Electronic GmbH, which conquered 50% of the US market with their wind energy systems and Hans Künz GmbH, which took over the market leader position in intermodal cranes.

The attractiveness of the US-market as an export destination and investment opportunity will continue to increase. Small and medium-sized businesses will benefit from the transatlantic free trade agreement TTIP. „Regardless of that, companies should keep in mind that the US-market is very big and different from Austria. How to approach the US market while taking into account the cultural differences, is the key to success. Innovation and commitment are mandatory.“ – so Rudolf Thaler.
