And the first GreenBuilding Certificate in the EU goes to Austria!

March 4, 2008

UNIQA Tower in Vienna is the first building in the European Union to receive the “green praise” from Brussels

UNIQA Tower uses warmth from the earth which reduces annual CO2 emissions by 84 tons and is equipped with an environmentally friendly heating and cooling system. As a result, the heat pump, with a heat capacity of 880 kilowatt (kW), covers a third of the heat requirement which contributes to the environmentally friendly operation of the glass high-rise building. With the support of Altherm Engineering and arsenal research, UNIQA Tower was able to achieve ideal conditions in terms of lighting, ventilation, heating and cooling, thereby using 40% less energy than comparable building structures.

The Austrian Energy Agency presented the award to Dr. Gottfried Wanitschek, a member of UNIQA’s board of directors. The Austrian Energy Agent is one of the 10 EU’s GreenBuilding partners and is considered a national contact point for the European Commission which initiated the GreenBuilding Program (GBP). This program aims at improving the energy efficiency and expanding the integration of renewable energies in non-residential buildings in Europe .

By receiving the first GreenBuilding Certificate in Austria as well as the EU, UNIQA Tower raises building owners’ and developers’ awareness of energy efficiency buildings.
