Austria Gains a Seat on the U.N. Security Council

Great Sign of Confidence in Austria 

As of January 2009, Austria will be a non-permanent member of the most important body of the United Nations. In the meeting of the U.N. General Assembly on October 18, 2008, 133 of the 192 U.N. member countries voted in favor of admitting Austria to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Austria will hold its seat on the UNSC for two years and participate in making vital decisions on peace, security, human rights and humanitarian aid. Elation was felt across Austrian party lines for the country´s non-permanent membership in UNSC. President Heinz Fischer stated that Austria had been rewarded for its “joint efforts” in the international community. Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer underlined the “great responsibility” U.N. member countries are placing in Austria for its commitment to the interest of small countries and the E.U. Foreign Minister Plassnik described the election as a “great sign of confidence“ in Austria .
