Austria’s construction industry on the fast track

April 28, 2008

The Austrian construction industry is a significant economic factor in Austria .

It has a gross production value of EUR 30 million and employs approximately 750,000 people. The current boom is due largely to accelerated infrastructure developments, including the building of the new stadium for the European Football Championship in 2008 and the extension of the Vienna airport. These measures will increase Austria ’s profile as an economic location and are the basis for the economic growth of tomorrow.

According to “Statistik Austria ”, a total of 6,006 Austrian companies from the structural and civil engineering sector of the construction industry had generated a production value in the amount of EUR 2.5 billion by September 2007. In non-residential construction, demand for industrial and commercial buildings increased considerably in 2007. The peak in non-residential construction will be reached this year with an expected growth of 4.4%. In the period 2008 to 2010 many big city development projects will stabilize the commercial building sector. Growth in non-residential construction is therefore estimated to increase by 2.7% in 2008, 2% in 2009 and 1.7% in 2010.

The increase in the structural engineering sector can be attributed to positive development in the following areas:

  • Industrial and commercial building - +22.6%
  • Residential building - +6.3%
  • Non-residential building - +14.6%
  • Other (refurbishing, renovation, etc.) – +2.5%

Civil engineering will be experiencing a significant change in Austria over the next few years due to increased activities in infrastructural projects as well as in the utilities and public work sectors. Civil engineering is expected to grow by 3.5% during the 2008-2010 period.

The residential building sector remained essentially steady in 2006 and 2007, indicating an increase of 7.7% in 2006 and slightly lower in 2007 (up 7%). Housing construction will be up by 3% in 2008, 2.5% in 2009 and 2.2% in 2010, based on the following influencing factors:

  • change in population growth due to migration
  • stronger demand for energy-efficient buildings
  • higher demand in metropolitan areas
  • significant increase in number of single households, retirees, etc.
