Austrian “Exporter’s Day” 2008

April 30, 2008

The Austrian “Exporter’s Day”, organized by Austrian Trade (AWO), is the largest event of its kind in Austria. This year’s event, which was already the sixth in a row, took place in Vienna on April 24, 2008.  Guests were welcomed by the President of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Österreich, WKO) Christoph Leitl and the Austrian Federal Minister of Economics, Martin Bartenstein. The event’s highlight is the presentation of the Austrian Export Awards.

Exports are a major reason for Austria’s outstanding economic performance. In terms of export growth, Austria holds a leading position in Europe. Even on a global scale, the small country need not hide. In the global comparison Austria ranks 7th in products and even 6th in service exports.

Austria’s EU accession in 1995, as well as the round of EU-enlargement in 2004, have contributed considerably to this success. The volume of trade with the candidate countries of 2004 in these past 4 years rose from 20 billion to 31 billion EUR. 37,000 new jobs were created solely because of the 10% export increase in 2007. Very important for Austria is the fact that not only merchandise exports, but also service exports are increasing.

Although the strength of the Euro against the U.S. dollar makes it difficult for European exporters, Leitl expects an export growth of 8 percent for the year 2008. This will provide approximately 30,000 additional jobs.
