Natural Gas: Better Delivery from Austria

January 6, 2009

New joint venture to improve cost and efficiency of natural gas compression

Two companies—the American firm Flowserve, which specializes in valves and flow products, and the German engineering firm Linde, specializing in gas processing--have recently formed a joint venture in Austria called Flowserve Compression Systems GmbH. The joint venture is based in Brunn am Gebirge, a suburb of Vienna , Austria . It plans to deliver at least 70 refueling systems this year to European Union countries.

The key to the iKompressorTM natural gas and biogas refueling system is that it combines an ionic liquid as a liquid piston together with efficient gas compression at near isothermal condition. As a result, friction is reduced along with energy and maintenance costs. Natural gas station owners can stretch out maintenance intervals from every 1,000 hours for conventional designs to 10,000 hours with IKrompressor.

Natural gas is processed and compressed for industrial applications such as refining and refrigeration. Multistage gas compression technology may not typically be on consumers’ minds as green technology, yet it is a prime example of incremental technical improvements that boost alternative fuels and preserve our environment.
