August 27, 2008

Both Ranked among the World’s 100 Largest Paper and Packaging Companies

For the eleventh time PricewaterhouseCoopers has published its report on the global paper and packaging industry with a ranking of the 100 companies in the industry with the highest sales volume. Austria figures prominently in the 2008 list with two corporations, Mayr-Melnhof Karton and Heinzel Holding .

Mayr-Melnhof posted sales of USD 2.38 billion as the global leader in the manufacture of recycled fiber based cartonboard and folding cartons and improved its position from 52 in 2007 to 42 in 2008. Heinzel Holding is new to the list this year with sales of USD 760 million and a ranking of 89.

The U.S. corporation International Paper took the no. 1 position with annual sales of USD 21.89 billion, followed by the Finnish-Swedish firm Stora Enso with USD 18.322 billion. Besides Stora Enso there are other companies on the list which produce paper, pulp, and packaging materials. UPM, Smurfit Kappa, Mondi Group, Sappi, and Norske Skog are ranked between 6 and 19.

For the first time since the report was published, European companies posted sales higher than U.S. firms. Thanks to the weak U.S. dollar, European companies with a sales volume of USD 123 billion outdid their U.S. counterparts.
