Industry Experts Brief Packaging Professionals on Newest Developments and Trends

From November 9 to 13, 2008 the largest exposition in the packaging industry took place at McCormick Place in Chicago. Over 2,000 exhibitors presented their latest products and technologies to more than 45,000 visitors. The PACK EXPO has a global influence on the packaging industry as evidenced by the 6,000 international visitors who came to this show from all over the world.

A delegation organized by the Austrian Trade Commission in Chicago , the U.S. Commercial Service in Vienna and the Austrian packaging trade magazine Austropack also traveled to the PACK EXPO in order to gather information on the latest trends in the packaging industry. The following companies participated in the the fact-finding massion: SML Maschinenbauges.m.b.H ., JANSSEN CILAG PHARMA GmbH , TEUFELBERGER Ges.m.b.H ., GOBATIN GmbH , FRANZ ZIMMERMANN Import & Export , Josef BAYER GmbH , SCHEYER Verpackungstechnik GmbH , PAWAG Verpackungen GmbH , THEODOR FRIES GmbH & Co and GIKO Verpackungen GmbH .

The Austrian Trade Commission organized an informal briefing during which the Austrians heard about the latest trends in the industry from three industry experts: Mr. Jorge Izquierdo, Vice President of Market Development, PMMI; Mr. Olle Mannertorp, President, Multifilm Packaging; and Ms. Laura Spingola, President, Trade Resources Ltd. A highlight of the visit was a reception generously hosted by the Austrian Consul General, Dr. Robert Zischg.

The PACK EXPO alternates between Chicago and Las Vegas and is indispensable for anyone looking for the latest trends and technologies in the packaging sector.

This trade show showed that the automation of packaging plants plays a very important role. Companies are striving to achieve a maximum of efficiency and productivity while further increasing product quality.

The speed and reliability of packaging machines was also in PACK EXPO’s spotlight. These features can be improved by increased automation as well as by more simplified monitoring and maintenance of the machines.

A main trend in the packaging industry is the sustainability and eco-friendliness of products. Nearly every other consumer considers these aspects when choosing packaging materials. The PACK EXPO strongly supported this green initiative and awarded those exhibitors who provided sustainable solutions with a “PACK EXPO Green” sign.

The PACK EXPO International 2008 clearly showed a growing demand for sustainable and cost-efficient solutions in the packaging industry.

This exhibition also revealed that the packaging material itself is gaining more and more importance. Innovative and fancy solutions concerning shapes and fields of application of eco-friendly food packages were introduced at PACK EXPO.

Over 2,000 international exhibitors from all over the world were present at the PACK EXPO, among them two Austrian companies: B&R , which is based in Eggelsberg, Upper Austria and has worldwide subsidiaries – also in the U.S. - and Constantia Packaging AG .
