Worker Safety ©

July 17, 2008

Workplace Safety was one of the Main Concerns of the Former Managing Director of SAPPI Austria’s Mill in Gratkorn, Styria

At the end of June Dr. Dieter Radner was awarded the Silver Medal for Service to the Republic of Austria by the Governor of Styria, Austria. On behalf of the country, Governor Franz Voves honored Dr. Radner for his achievements in improving on-the-job safety in the entire Austrian paper industry.

SAPPI ’s Gratkorn paper and cellulose plant, where Dr. Radner managed the company until he retired and handed the reins over to the current Managing Director, Dr. Max Oberhumer, was restructured under his direction and became the global concern’s most modern facility through his farsighted investments. SAPPI Gratkorn employs about 1,300 people and is considered a modern and successful company in the global paper industry.

One of Radner’s major attributes is his personal commitment to lower the incidence of job-related accidents. For many years he championed worker integrity in the paper, board and cellulose industry as head of the “Workplace Safety” research group, as Vice President of Austropapier (Austrian Paper Industry Association), as President of ÖZEPA (Austrian Association of Cellulose and Paper Chemists and Technicians), and as a boardmember of the Styrian Industrial Association. His commitment is reflected in a more than 90% reduction in job-related accidents at the Gratkorn mill under his management.
