November 3, 2008

George C. Marshall Visit to Austria Program 2008

Each year since 2007, in appreciation of the assistance provided by the United States to Austria by the post-WWII “Marshall Plan”, Austria invites a group of U.S. government officials, experts, and business leaders to Austria to attend a series of seminars, lectures, workshops and site visits showcasing Austrian innovations in industry and technology.  The objective is to foster mutual understanding, and to explore avenues for potential increased Austrian-American cooperation.

This year’s delegation focused on the automotive industry.  12 participants from the United States who are involved in the automotive industry traveled to Austria for one week.  During this time the group participated in many interesting lectures, roundtable discussions and site visits.  Some of the Austrian automotive companies visited included: the General Motors Wien-Aspern plant, Magna Steyr, AVL, and Fronius.  In addition, the group also visited the Technical University of Graz and the Institute for Energy Research and also attended presentations by the Federation of Austrian Industry, Automotive Cluster Styria, as well as the Federal Ministry of Economics & Labor.

The U.S. delegation was especially impressed by the high technical competence of Austrian companies, products, and services.  In addition they also appreciated Austria’s proximity to the dynamic new European markets and Austria’s excellent interaction between business and government.
