As the days get shorter in the northern hemisphere, it will soon be time for the Christmas markets to open, drawing in crowds of visitors with their attractions and excitements.
The first Christmas market held in Vienna was in 1722. The “traditional” fairs, which were once held annually, have disappeared from the modern metropolis, but the Christmas market managed to find a home for itself in the city during the 19th century. The location has changed over the years – it was variously to be found in the city centre or in the grounds of the imperial complex – and a number of smaller markets have been absorbed.
This year, there will be 14 Advent markets in Vienna with a total of 800 stands; no other city in the EU can boast as many markets during the festive season. The largest is Vienna’s Christkindlmarkt in front of the City Hall, with more than 100 stands; in 2022, no less than three million visitors came to enjoy its blend of nostalgia and romanticism.
Advent markets are obviously also an important consideration for tourism; 30% of all visitors who take a holiday in Austria in November and December visit a Christmas market during their stay, according to a customer survey carried out during last year’s winter season. Christmas markets are also an important factor when choosing a winter city break.
Austrian Christmas markets are expected to chalk up a turnover of €400 million in 2023, and a host of visitors from every corner of the world can look forward to regional specialities, local craftsmanship, seasonal decorations and all kinds of gastronomic goodies.
