Austrian firm Wiehag builds the first wood hybrid building in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, Austrian firm Weihag, which specialises in timber construction, is building the first hybrid wooden building in the Zuidas district. Completion is scheduled for late 2025.

Altheim-based timber construction specialist Wiehag aims to shape the future of Amsterdam with its latest project. Amsterdam with its latest project: The "CubeHouse" is the first hybrid wooden building to rise on the Zuidas. The company was commissioned to design and produce the glulam elements, as well as supply and assemble them. The laminated wooden elements were supplied by Stora Enso. The CubeHouse is designed to inspire and shape the working world of tomorrow. A three-dimensional approach creates spaces where visitors, businesses and nature come together.

The multi-storey building consists of 75% recycled and/or bio-based materials. For construction 13,000 cubic metres of wood, most of which comes from sustainably managed forests. According to Wiehag, this wood will store up to 9,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the emissions from the annual electricity consumption of more than 10,000 people.

The CubeHouse has received an excellent rating according to BREEAM standards. Visitors and tenants can enjoy their lunch outside in the publicly accessible roof garden. Surrounded by a variety of plants, the roof garden offers cooling when needed. Water reservoirs on the roof surfaces collect up to 175 m³ of water, which can be used for flushing toilets, for example. Completion is scheduled for 2025.
