At this year’s ceremony, two projects in Norway have been awarded the Austrian Green Planet Building Technology prize: supermarket chain KIWI Lerberg with their building in Hokksund and coffee roastery Johann Johannson in Vestby.
Both projects used Austrian building technology from ©Kielsteg GmbH.
Kielsteg is a series of lightweight, high-performance wooden construction elements used to form roofs and structural floors. Their strength comes from a unique cellular structure in which top and bottom layers of solid wood are linked by vertical webs of plywood or OSB. In cross-section, the webs form a characteristic curve in the form of a boat’s keel; hence the name Kielsteg, meaning ‘keel-web’.
In KIWI’s store, CO2 emissions are reduced by around 60 per cent, all surplus energy from the fridge and freezer is used for heating and there are charging stations for electric cars and electric bicycles. With its unique roof construction using Kielsteg elements, it meets all the requirements of a roof exposed to high loads due to snow and green roofing, while at the same time being sustainable.
Norway’s most eco-friendly coffee roastery consists of more than 90 per cent solid wood. The 6,780 m² roof structure is made of Kielsteg elements and the whole building is both renewable and eco-friendly.
Kielsteg GmbH recently received the awards in Vienna and stated:
“As a company, we are very pleased with this award, which, initiated by the Federal Ministry and the Austrian Foreign Trade Association, refers directly to the responsibility of all of us in our daily actions to support the task of environmental and climate protection!”
“The credit for the two award-winning projects Kiwi Lerberg and Kaffeerösterei Vestby also goes to the builder Joh. Johannson and the architects from A-Lab and Astrup og Hellern. We will send them the metal plaques to display in their buildings.”
