The Norwegian alcohol monopoly Vinmonopolet opened its own tender for PIWI wines from Austria this year. A tender is a separate import quota in Norway's alcohol market, which is strictly regulated by the state. Winemakers from Austria were now able to submit their PIWI wines made from Cabernet Blanc, Donauriesling or Donauveltliner from the 2021 vintage to Vinmonopolet.
PIWI wines from Austria have already won many awards, for example at the International PIWI Wine Award in 2021: four white wines received the highest honor, Top Gold, and a Souvignier Gris from Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) even received a rating of 98 points. Also in 2020, several Austrian wines won gold: four white wines (two from Lower Austria, two from Styria), one red wine (Lower Austria) and a Styrian sparkling wine, which also received the best rating of all sparkling wines with 98 points.
