Växjö’s combined railway station and municipality house is unique in several respects and has attracted a lot of national and international attention already during the construction phase: The beams, supports and columns made of solid wood were delivered from Austria and then unloaded and mounted underneath a weather protection tent – the highest “roof” in the middle of the city.

A proper landmark for the "greenest city in Europe".
The building itself is constructed in skeleton construction with a total of 3.100 m³ Cross Laminated Timber BBS, 1.100 m³ of glulam (at least three timber lamellas glued parallel to the grain), as well as 3-layer solid wood panels – all of which have been produced and delivered by Binderholz.

This dedication has now been honoured with the Austrian Green Planet Building® Technology Award: As Binderholz was not only commissioned with the assembly of the complete wooden structure, but with the structural calculation, the implementation of the technical building performance and the production modelling as well.

The company behind the project:
Binderholz was founded in 1950 by Franz Binder senior as a small sawmill. Since then, the company has grown into a fully integrated group that utilises state-of-the-art technology and manufacturing methods. Besides its original headquarters in Fügen, Austria, the binderholz Group operates 60 other sites. By now, more than 6.300 employees in Europe and the US share the company’s passion for wood.

What is the Austrian Green Planet Building® Award about?
Austrian Green Planet Building® is a joint initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

The initiative is dedicated to award highly sustainable, energy efficient and ecologically friendly buildings, constructed or refurbished outside of Austria, with substantial involvement of Austrian architects, planner, construction companies and technology suppliers. Buildings, that at the same time meet the ambitious requirements of the Austrian building assessment system “klimaaktiv” which is part of the Austrian climate protection initiative. In Austria, about 1.500 high-quality buildings meet those highest standards of energy efficiency and climate protection.
