Inclusion among the “50 Best” is a great honour, as the British media company William Reed knows a thing or two about gourmet food, up-market bars and luxury hotels. William Reed founded his publishing house more than 160 years ago, bringing out his first trade magazine, “The Grocer”, a title still in circulation to this day. Besides its classic magazine publications, the company now supplies information, data and insights into the food and beverage industry at everything from exhibitions and trade fairs to prize-giving ceremonies.

The “50 Best” brand established in 2002 recognises the world’s best companies in the gastronomy sector; in addition to the top restaurants and bars rankings, there has also been a “The World’s 50 Best Hotels” listing since 2023, with a jury of more than 800 international industry experts (hoteliers, travel writers and experienced luxury travellers) assessing service, food, facilities, location and views.

The 5-star Superior Hotel Sacher Wien in Austria’s capital has made it onto this prestigious list for the first time and, sitting proudly in 49th place, is the only hotel from a German-speaking country to feature in the top 50!

Located opposite the Vienna State Opera in the heart of the Austrian capital’s Old Town, the exquisite hotel boasts more than 152 rooms and suites and was founded by Eduard Sacher, whose father invented the Original Sachertorte, probably Austria’s most famous speciality chocolate treat. The jury was impressed to find that this connection is honoured and celebrated to this day, and noted in particular the institution’s perfect blend of tradition, luxury, cultural significance and Austria’s legendary cordiality, complemented by an excellent restaurant and bars (not to mention a spa and a gym!). The Sacher has hosted many of the great and the good in its time, welcoming them with elegance, splendour and great hospitality.

Having achieved a place among “The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025”, the Hotel Sacher Wien is now officially one of the top luxury hotels on the planet, and this impressive acknowledgment has coincided with an upcoming birthday – the family-run concern will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.
