It’s difficult for visitors to escape all the culture on offer in Vienna – there are stages of every size, in a host of venues from airy concert halls to cellar bars, with a packed performance season complemented by pop-up festival line-ups; whether broad-based repertoire or laser-focused programme, traditional or contemporary, there is something to suit every taste.

The MusikTheater an der Wien is one of the oldest theatres in Austria’s cultural capital. In a history stretching back more than 200 years, it has seen (and staged) it all, including several premiere performances ranging from Ludwig van Beethoven’s Fidelio through operetta classics such as Johann Strauss’s Fledermaus to the world premiere of Elisabeth during the company’s musicals era in the 1990s. These many and various high points have now most recently been joined by an International Opera Award nomination.

The doors had been closed for two years of comprehensive renovation, but the MusikTheater an der Wien is now back with a vengeance, both in terms of its programme and its international profile; the promise of the nomination was fulfilled at the International Opera Awards prize-giving ceremony held at the Greek National Opera in Athens, with a win in the “Opera Company” category in the shape of the prize for “Best Opera House”.

The jury noted the courageous and varied programme put on during the 2024-5 season, which encompassed four centuries of musical theatre from staged performances to concertante opera productions and innovative educational initiatives. The opera house, with all its wealth of tradition, is back with a bang – and now has an “opera Oscar” to show for it.

The International Opera Awards have been awarded annually since 2013. With many other musical and cultural awards, opera can be just one category amongst many, but the International Opera Awards honour exceptional achievement in musical theatre on five continents, making the prizes one of the most sought-after distinctions in the opera world. Lovers of musical theatre can get involved in the voting, and the ultimate winners are selected by an international jury of artists, critics and cultural managers under the aegis of “Opera” magazine. Grants are also awarded to rising stars in the opera world.
