The Upper Austrian aluminium producer AMAG now offers certified low CO2 primary aluminium, which produces a maximum of 4 tonnes of CO2 per tonne. By using hydroelectric power and optimised production processes, AMAG is setting new standards in low-emission aluminium production.

Typically, around 15 tonnes of CO2 are emitted per tonne of primary aluminium worldwide. The CO2 footprint of aluminium electrolysis depends largely on the energy source. While using electricity from coal or gas results in high emissions, the special "Alouette" electrolysis process can rely entirely on renewable electricity from hydroelectric power plants. According to the company, this results in almost zero energy-related CO2 emissions. In addition, CO2 emissions must be further minimized through high plant efficiency and continuous optimization. AMAG's goal is to make all aluminum products as environmentally friendly as possible and to provide its customers with the best possible support to achieve their environmental goals.
