Between 23-24 October in Auckland, the first-ever European Union – New Zealand Business Summit marked a major milestone in the EU–New Zealand partnership under the EU–NZ Free Trade Agreement and New Zealand’s participation in Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme.
Nearly 500 business and political leaders from Europe and New Zealand came together to explore new opportunities in key sectors including agrifood and agritech, clean technology and renewables, infrastructure and investment, deep tech and AI, aerospace and defence, sustainability, and the Māori economy.
The event was opened by New Zealand Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon and featured senior speakers such as European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič, New Zealand Ministers including Todd McClay (Trade & Investment) and Tama Potaka (Māori Development), alongside expert business panellists.
The Summit highlighted the rapid growth in EU–NZ trade since the FTA came into force, with New Zealand exports to the EU increasing by NZ$2 billion, bringing total two‑way trade to NZ$21.58 billion (year ending June 2025).
Speakers underscored strong cooperation in innovation, research, and technology, with Horizon Europe opening new pathways for joint EU‑NZ research collaborations.
Representatives from all 27 EU Member States, business chambers, research institutions, and companies of all sizes underlined a shared commitment to sustainable growth, fair, rules‑based trade, and deepening economic ties.
The Summit received extensive coverage across New Zealand media, signalling growing interest in the EU–New Zealand partnership and laying the groundwork for future cooperation and commercial opportunities.
