Last December 3, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Philippines organized the national award ceremonies for the 2021 Energy Globe Award that was presented to Plastic Bank. Plastic Bank helps to stop ocean plastic while improving the lives of those who collect it. Accepting the award were Plastic Bank Country Manager Rene Guarin, Chief Country Development Officer Gidget Velez, Ph Operations Manager and concurrent Global Community Development Specialist Dhang Tecson, Area Managers Carla Capistrano and Paul Orpiada.

In 2013, David Katz and Shaun Frankson founded Plastic Bank to gather the world together to stop ocean plastic. Their project in the Philippines works by establishing recycling ecosystems with local collection branches and processing partners. Plastic Bank members receive a premium for the materials they collect. When collectors deposit plastic waste, their ID is scanned, plastic is sorted and weighed by material and color. The collectors receive market price for plastic and premiums are automatically deposited into their digital bank account, thus improving the lives of those who collect the plastic. In establishing the recycling ecosystems, Plastic Bank analyses the trends for plastic pollution and the ocean, looks at the recycling infrastructure, how the problem is currently managed, and partners with global organizations like the Austrian company Greiner Packaging to launch ethical recycling ecosystems.

A sustainable initiative for a sustainable future!

Committed people all around the world develop solutions for the most pressing environmental problems of our time like resource scarcity, air and water pollution, erosion, climate change or dependence on fossil fuels. Although these solutions are readily available, they often remain unheard of. Energy Globe gives them a voice and presents them to a large audience to make them visible and encourage others to come up with their own innovative solution.

With more than 180 participating countries, the Energy Globe Award is the most important environmental award worldwide. Projects from all over the world are submitted, ranging from small and simple initiatives to large-scale high-end ones.
