With a turnover of €21.42 billion and an export ratio of some 80%, Austria’s GreenTech sector is proof positive that climate protection and commerce are entirely compatible.

Austria has established itself as one of the world’s leading GreenTech nations, with more than 3,000 companies employing nearly 60,000 people and generating solutions in sectors that range from renewable energy sources to the circular economy and climate-neutral industrial manufacturing. The industry recorded average annual growth of 8.9% between 2019 and 2023.

This success is based on a long tradition of pioneering spirit; Austria is already drawing 90% of its power consumption from renewable sources and has set itself the ambitious goal of being completely climate-neutral by 2040. Firms like voestalpine and the Plansee Group have been pushing the envelope and showing what industrial decarbonisation can look like in practical terms.

Austria has been burnishing its reputation in the Green Building sector in particular, with a timber construction quota of some 25% in all new builds that has made it one of the leading European nations for sustainable building – and this expertise is being exported throughout the world.

In addition to supplying building materials and system solutions, Austrian firms are also creating holistic designs for climate-friendly construction, from passive house technology (which was largely developed in Austria) to innovative timber/concrete connection systems and “green cements” whose manufacture generates significantly less CO₂ than conventional products. This reduces the carbon footprint of a building calculated over its entire life cycle.

The global green economy market is growing dynamically and may exceed the $7 trillion mark by 2030. Austrian firms are ideally positioned to reap the benefits of this transformation, with market-ready technologies, a robust export network and the support of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA branch offices in over 70 countries.
