Although the mining industry does not play as significant a role in Austria as it does in Sweden, VA Erzberg operates Europe’s largest iron ore mine outside Sweden. Austria is also home to a major steel producer in voestalpine, which—like SSAB and Stegra—is actively developing green steel. Around these industries, a dynamic ecosystem of specialized suppliers and research institutions has emerged, driving innovation and new solutions.
In May 2026, Austrian companies from this ecosystem visited Northern Sweden to establish contacts, exchange ideas, and identify business opportunities.
