The OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) recently published its latest study on the topic of education: Education at a Glance 2023.
Along with other interesting results, it has once again clearly shown that practically based training has positive consequences for later work prospects; the unemployment rate is higher among people with a general level of education in practically every country in the study. As a result, the OECD recommends designing education to be more practically based and to improve the quality and perception of vocational training in order to provide an equally valid alternative to academic education.
Austria is already very much on the right track here and can be proud of the range of vocational training available domestically: 76% of all senior high school-leaving qualifications are in vocational training, and Austria is at the very top when it comes to the highest education level attained: 53% of 25-34-year-olds have a vocational qualification as their highest educational achievement; the average in the EU is 35% and the OECD average is only 32%.
