ANDRITZ’s Joint Venture in Bhutan with DGPC: Bhutan Automation and Engineering Limited

Bhutan, blessed with an impressive hydropower potential of over 36 GW, currently harnesses about 2.3 GW through installed capacity. ANDRITZ has played a pivotal role in shaping Bhutan's hydropower landscape for years, having supplied equipment for the Lower Basochhu project, which was commissioned in 2004, and for the Dagachhu hydropower project in 2015.

Recognizing Bhutan's immense hydro potential, ANDRITZ joined forces with Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) in 2017 to establish a joint venture. This collaboration, known as Bhutan Automation and Engineering Limited (BAEL), was set up in Chukha, with ANDRITZ holding a 49% stake and DGPC a majority share of 51%. Conveniently located near Paro Airport, BAEL boasts a team of over 40 employees dedicated to serving Bhutan’s secondary equipment market.

Since its inception in 2017, this joint venture has seen impressive and steady growth. Starting with an initial order intake of approximately MBTN 50 (MEUR 0.55), it has soared to nearly MBTN 300 (MEUR 3.3) by the close of 2023. Looking forward the venture sets its sights high, aiming to surpass MBTN 440 (MEUR 4.8) in 2024. ANDRITZ is proud to be a part of this venture and contributing to Bhutan's growth story.

BAEL specializes in manufacturing hydro automation systems, including control, protection, excitation systems, SCADA, and digital governors, catering to hydropower plants across the country. Since its inception, BAEL has secured significant orders from key hydro projects such as Tala, Basochhu, Punatsangchhu I & II, and Chukha, with a clientele that includes DGPC, PHPA, and Bhutan Power Corporation.
