An innovative green solution for solving the crisis of safe drinking water in the coastal region of Bangladesh has been introducing by the BEDS through respecting local technology with modern facilities and utilizing renewable sources of water and energy. Around 12000 coastal families are getting safe drinking water at a rate of 0.5tk/liter throughout the year round. Three pond-sand filter and water purification system have been established along with Reverse Osmosis (RO) for the better quality of water. Besides, water ATM machine has been installed to facilitate the distribution of water among the villagers along with 400 water jars. However, the project also ensures additional livelihood opportunity for many families as they are engaging themselves in the distribution of water in the community level following the social business model. As a result, spreading out of water-borne diseases is reducing in the locality, awareness of using renewable energy at the household-level consumption are escalating, and additional income generating opportunities have been created for many peoples. Thus, the community-based initiative is a time befitting climate smart nature-based solutions for meeting the demand of safe drinking water, protecting environment, raising awareness among the villagers for utilizing natural resources, and improving livelihood conditions of the marginal people.
