She Shapes Science: Women in STEM in Austria and Japan

  • Osaka

Let's discuss challenges, solutions, and opportunities together with experts at EXPO 2025 in Osaka.

Some truths are often hard to hear, such as this one: despite the growing economic importance of technological innovations, women remain severely underrepresented in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) worldwide. This is true in Japan – one of the most industrialised countries in the world – and also in Austria. But in both countries, a number of initiatives and programmes show that change is underway. In recent years, targeted measures have been taken to break down barriers, challenge traditional role models and promote young talent. The path has been paved, but there is still work to be done! The key question now is: how can we further strengthen this positive trend, break down stereotypes in the long term and enable careers for women in STEM fields?

Some may ask themselves: Why is that? Technological developments permeate all areas of life today, and without the perspectives and talents of women – i.e. half the world's population – important innovation potential is lost. Studies clearly show that diverse teams are more successful, creative and sustainable. This means that when women are absent from research, technology and development, their perspectives are also absent – in algorithms, in products, in solutions to societal challenges. And we simply cannot afford that – as a society and as an economy. So what can we do together to promote talent, break down stereotypes and enable STEM careers?

Join Austrian and Japanese experts from science, business and society at the Women's Pavilion at EXPO on 1 September 2025 from 3.30 to 5 p.m. to discuss the differences and similarities between the challenges, learn more about concrete solutions and programmes, and immerse yourself in personal success stories from different countries and cultures.
