Coop Himmelb(l)au is an internationally active architecture studio – even the Chinese market is being conquered by their innovative designs and sustainability-focused concepts. After the Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition in Shenzhen, the International Conference Center in Dalian is the second building in China that owes its design and functionality to this Viennese architecture studio.
As a hybrid building encompassing a conference center, theater, opera house, exhibition center and several service facilities, designing the International Conference Center constituted a particularly formidable challenge. However, Coop Himmelb(l)au’s concept bid prevailed against other internationally renowned architects and gained widespread international buzz. Their design has since received several rewards, including the prestigious Wallpaper Design Award in the category of “Best Building Sites”.
In order to make the building more sustainable, Coop Himmelb(l)au focused on incorporating resource-efficient concepts into the design. One of the building’s special features is a sophisticated cooling system using sea water, which generates energy savings of 30%. With their innovative design of the Dalian International Conference Center, Coop Himmelb(l)au made a notable contribution to the advancement of sustainable development in China.
