WorldSkills 2024 was held in Lyon, France, from 10 to 15 September, giving young experts from all over the world an opportunity to display their proficiency in more than 60 vocational disciplines. Cheered on by some 30,000 fans, many of these were to be awarded medals at the closing ceremony.
The competition was particularly strong this year, with 1,400 contenders from almost 70 countries and regions taking part; China was especially well represented and went on to win 39 gold medals. As a result, Team Austria may have had slimmer pickings, but nonetheless netted three golds, one silver and three bronze.
Some consolation was provided by the 22 Medals for Excellence won by the team for outstanding performances in addition to their podium tally, which left Austria unequivocally in the vocational Top 10, either in sixth place (Olympic method) or eighth (WorldSkills ranking), depending on the tallying system used.
Team Austria certainly has every reason to feel proud! The Austrian participants made every effort and showed great passion in demonstrating their professional abilities, proving that they are world leaders in classic vocations and modern, technology-orientated disciplines alike.
