On Tuesday 22nd July 2021, it was officially announced that one of the world’s leading weapons manufacturers, the Austrian Glock GmbH will be providing the Singapore Police Force with their Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol. Glock will be supplying more than 6000 service pistols to the Singapore Police Force, as reported by Channel News Asia.
The Singapore Police Force has been using Taurus M85 revolvers since 2002. However, due to the “heightened security climate”, Singapore has been training its police force in the use of service pistols since 2017. Now, Glock has been selected as the new provider of service pistols. By the end of 2023, all frontline regulars will be trained to operate the Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol.
The Glock 19 Gen 5 pistol’s magazine has a standard capacity of 15 rounds, compared to most revolvers which only fit 6 bullets. The Singapore Police Force states that their change to pistols will allow for the reduction in loading time and consequently improve their firepower.
