Austrian Mining Industry


The Austrian mining industry represents a cornerstone of the country's economic development and is rich in tradition and knowledge. The extraction of mineral raw materials in Austria goes beyond mere resource acquisition—it fuels regional growth and constitutes a remarkable base for our manufacturing sector, which accounts for 25% of GDP. Internationally, Austria stands out for its impressive production of raw materials, such as magnesite and tungsten.


While relatively small in size, Austria's mining sector boasts significant production volumes compared to global standards. The country ranks 5th worldwide in magnesite production, 7th in tungsten ore, and 11th in talc. With over 1,200 above-ground quarries and 40 underground mines, Austria demonstrates its commitment to sustainable resource extraction. The industry is led by specialized Austrian companies that are recognised as global market leaders, renowned for their cutting-edge technology and exceptional products.

 

Austria's mining sector showcases its unique treasures, including the largest underground tungsten ore deposit in the western world, the largest talcum deposit in Central Europe, and the largest siderite deposit globally. Moreover, Austria stands as a global leader in fireproof products and pioneers the use of recycled materials in mineral raw materials, further highlighting its commitment to sustainability.
