Austria and Australia join forces for industrial decarbonisation

Austria and Australia launched the Net-Zero Industries mission back in 2022 to promote international research cooperation for the development and demonstration of key technologies for industrial decarbonisation by 2030. With the Austrian-Australian initiative in this area, both countries are now taking a further step towards Net Zero.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in Australia and the Austrian Bundesministerium für Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Energie, Mobilität, Innovation & Technologie are therefore launching a joint call to decarbonise heavy industries. They are supporting demonstration and pilot projects (technology maturity levels 5 to 8) to strengthen bilateral industry relations and facilitate the development of innovative decarbonisation technologies for energy-intensive industries.

The new funding will come from the Australia-Austria Industrial Decarbonisation Demonstration Partnerships Program, which will advance the development of innovative technologies to decarbonise energy-intensive hard-to-abate industries. Further, it will create opportunities for innovation and cost-competitive solutions to support global emissions reductions and the transition to Net Zero. A total of around EUR 7 million is available for Austrian applicants, while Australian companies can apply for up to $3.5 million in grants. Yet, to be eligible, applicants must have partners from both countries.
