Cutting directly through the heart of the Koralpe mountain range, the new line will reduce travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt from three hours to just 45 minutes, making journeys more comfortable and accessible. It will also improve access to Western Styria, Southern Carinthia and neighbouring countries such as Hungary and Italy.
The benefits extend far beyond passengers. The Koralm Railway strengthens the Baltic–Adriatic Corridor, making rail freight more attractive and cost-effective, helping Austrian companies stay internationally competitive. Environmentally, rail freight produces around 30 times fewer CO₂ emissions than road transport, supporting a more sustainable future.
With 50 kilometres of tunnels and more than 100 bridges, the project showcases Austria’s world-class rail engineering. Leading Austrian companies Rhomberg Sersa Rail Group, PORR Group, voestalpine Railway Systems, Siemens Mobility and Sprecher Automation are playing key roles in its construction.
The Koralm Railway is scheduled to be fully operational by December 2025, ushering in a new era of connectivity for Austria and Europe.
