Sustainable construction is becoming increasingly important in China, as the country aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. During the “Greenbuild” business mission organized by the ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Beijing office from March 18 to 20, 2026, five leading Austrian companies from the timber construction and architecture sectors gained first-hand insight into the local situation and held discussions with major organizations and companies.

Among the participating companies were Baumschlager Eberle Hong Kong Ltd., an internationally renowned architectural practice known for energy-efficient and climate-responsive building design; KLH Massivholz GmbH, a pioneer in the production of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels; Pfeifer Timber GmbH, a key European supplier of high-quality timber products and engineered wood solutions; HASSLACHER Holding GmbH, a globally active provider of glulam, CLT, and other innovative timber construction materials; and Raimund Beck KG, a leading manufacturer of fastening systems and wire staples for modern timber and modular construction.

Highlights included a timber construction expert conference in Beijing, organized jointly with the National Center of Technology Innovation for Green and Low-Carbon Building, as well as professional meetings with the Wuxi Urban Construction Development Group, Jiazhu Construction Technology Co., Ltd. and TECSUN (Suzhou) HOMES Co., Ltd. The business mission made it clear that Austrian building solutions enjoy an excellent reputation in China. Several Chinese partners recognized the Austrian timber technology sector for its innovation and worldwide leading position. It will, however, take time until more Chinese public and private high-rise buildings will be realized with the most natural building material timber. Intensified research, industrial cooperation, and pilot projects will prepare the way.
