On 12 September 2025, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi for an official visit to Vienna. The talks focused on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, global challenges, as well as collaboration in science and culture. China is one of Austria’s most important trade and investment partners and currently the country’s fourth largest trading partner. Around 650 Austrian companies are active in China, underlining the significance of the Chinese market for the Austrian economy. Meinl-Reisinger emphasized the need for fair conditions and legal certainty for Austrian and European businesses.

Looking ahead to the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, both sides expressed their commitment to deepening cooperation. The discussions also highlighted the importance of effective multilateralism, the preservation of a rules-based international order, and the promotion of peace. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China plays a crucial role in this regard.

On the same day, Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen also met with Minister Wang Yi, describing the visit as an excellent opportunity to discuss the strong relations between Austria and China. Both fostered an exchange on current geopolitical challenges and the fight against climate change, and also stressed, given global dynamics, an effective and functioning multilateral system is more crucial than ever.
