Austria might not be your initial port of call for red wine, nevertheless, they are quickly gaining in reputation.
Red grape varieties, like Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, feel right at home in the Burgenland, where the climate is quite different to the rest of Austria. Many hours of sunshine and the moderating effect of one of Europe's largest steppe lake provide ideal ripening conditions.
So why are red wines only now receiving more international recognition? Perhaps because most people associate Austria with white wines and especially Grüner Veltliner? Maybe because Austrians did not push it enough and preferred to drink it themselves? Whatever the reason was, Austrian red wines are here to stay!
