The industrial services provider "Bilfinger Industrial Services Austria" is supporting the Lithuanian energy company "Ignitis gamyba" with the expansion of the Kruonis pumped storage power plant in Lithuania. The contract is being realised in cooperation with the technology group "Voith" and aims to strengthen the green and independent energy supply in Lithuania.
"Voith will now supply a new fifth pump turbine unit, while “Bilfinger” is responsible for the construction of a new exposed penstock connecting the upper reservoir of the power plant with the lower reservoir and the pump turbine.
The new plant is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2026. The Kruonis pumped storage power plant is the only power plant of its kind in the Baltic region and plays an important role in securing the energy supply and stabilising the electricity grid. It is primarily used to balance electricity supply and demand.
As part of this work, "Bilfinger" is responsible for the entire value chain for the approximately 900 metre long exposed penstock with a diameter of 5250 mm, including engineering, production, transport, assembly, corrosion protection and commissioning. Adapting to the existing plant components and the prevailing conditions poses a particular challenge.
