Heavy Industry has long had a negative effect on the environment and thus far we have been unable to or unwilling to change this. In order to reach net-zero by 2050 this needs to change sooner rather than later and this new technology. Developments are already underway and recently Primetals has developed a new technology for part of the iron refining process, allowing it to run at closer to net-zero emissions by replacing coal with hydrogen as the fuel used.

The first test facility was commissioned in Donawitz, Austria by Voestalpine and now Primetals has also joined Australia’s Heavy Industry Low-Carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC) which aims to further develop technologies to decarbonize Heavy Industry. Australia with its abundance of natural resources and the correspondingly large industry around extracting and refining those resources, are a prime market to benefit from these new advances in sustainability.
