OMV has made a final investment decision on a 140-megawatt green hydrogen project in Lower Austria that will be one of the largest electrolysis plants in Europe. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2027, with an annual output of 23,000 tons of green hydrogen. The hydrogen will supply the OMV refinery in Schwechat. OMV plans to invest a mid-triple-digit million euro amount in the Bruck an der Leitha project in Lower Austria, pending a successful outcome in auctions held by the European and Austrian Hydrogen Banks.

With an annual production capacity of up to 23,000 tons of green hydrogen, the new facility will be one of the largest of its kind in Europe. OMV anticipates the plant will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 150,000 tons per year, equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of about 20,000 people.

Scheduled to begin operation by the end of 2027, the new facility will produce green hydrogen using renewable energy from wind, solar and hydropower sources. The 140 MW electrolyzer project builds on the experience gained from OMV’s 10 MW electrolyzer, successfully completed at the end of 2024 in cooperation with Kommunalkredit. That earlier plant was one of the first green hydrogen production facilities in Europe and was certified as a 'Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin' (RFNBO) under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
