Every year, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA, in cooperation with the Vienna University of Business and Economics, conducts a global survey among Austrian subsidiaries to assess the business climate and expectations for the coming year. For Albania the respondents view the overall environment as stable with a slightly positive tilt, while still facing notable structural challenges.
In 2025, 74% of Austrian subsidiaries in Albania described the economic situation as unchanged compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, 16% reported an improvement and 10% a deterioration. This reflects a slightly more optimistic perception than the overall global economic sentiment (16% improved, 63% unchanged, 21% deteriorated). Regarding company performance, most respondents indicated that investment levels, total turnover, order books, and capacity utilization either remained the same or declined in 2025.
Expectations for 2026 present a mixed but mostly stable picture. A majority of subsidiaries (58%) expect the business environment to remain unchanged, while 21% anticipate an improvement and an equal share foresee a downturn. Most companies also expect their turnover, workforce, investment plans, and order volumes to remain stable, although views on capacity utilization vary.
Considering market related topics, respondents rated digitalisation (95% good/very good) and employment law (84% good/very good) positively. Key challenges remain in fighting crime and corruption (79% bad/very bad), the availability of qualified labour (79% bad/very bad), and legal certainty (74% bad/very bad). Current military conflicts and geopolitical tensions (37%), discrimination against foreign companies (26%), and protectionism (26%) are seen as the greatest external risks. Sustainability and AI adoption are gaining importance across Austrian subsidiaries in Albania.
