With profound sadness, we share that the Austrian business community in the United States has lost one of its most remarkable pioneers of the film industry. Otto Nemenz, founder of Otto Nemenz International, passed away on November 1, 2025, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Austria in 1941, Otto Nemenz’s life was defined by vision, perseverance, and exceptional craftsmanship. Having spent his formative years in Austria, Greece, and Turkey, he arrived in the United States in 1964, driven by a deep passion for the art and science of filmmaking. From his early days as a lens technician at Panavision to his groundbreaking work on the film Grand Prix, Otto’s dedication to precision optics and innovation distinguished him early on.
In 1979, he founded Otto Nemenz International in a small storefront off Sunset Boulevard. Under Otto’s dedicated leadership and commitment to excellence, the company quickly rose to prominence within the global cinematography community. By 1982, Otto had established its Hollywood headquarters on Vine Street, and in 2020, he celebrated the opening of a state-of-the-art, 38,000-square-foot facility in Culver City, marking more than four decades of service to the global film community.
His technical achievements earned widespread recognition. In 1991, Otto Nemenz International received the Academy Award for Technical Achievement for the design and development of the Canon/Nemenz Zoom Lens. Otto was a long-standing associate member of the American Society of Cinematographers, a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a proud member of I.A.T.S.E. Local 600. His peers honored his contributions with the ASC Award of Distinction in 2015 and the ASC Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
Otto Nemenz’s name became synonymous with innovation, integrity, and excellence in cinematography. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and commitment to fostering talent and craftsmanship across generations.
Our deepest condolences go to the Nemenz family and the entire Otto Nemenz International team. Otto’s legacy will continue to live on—in every story told and in every frame, illuminated by the vision he helped make possible.
In honor of the life and legacy of Otto Nemenz,
