State Visit to South Africa - Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen
South Africa is currently experiencing a phase of economic renewal. Following the parliamentary elections in May 2024, the new multi-party government (‘Government of National Unity - GNU’) under President Cyril Ramaphosa has introduced important reforms to boost economic growth. Of particular note is the end of targeted power cuts (‘load-shedding’) by the state-owned electricity supplier Eskom, which has led to a significant easing of the situation in all sectors. The growth prospects for gross domestic product (GDP) have also improved, with forecasts for 2025 ranging from 1.5% to 2.6%. Another important aspect of economic development in South Africa is the modernisation of the logistics sector. The state-owned transport company Transnet has entered into pioneering partnerships with private operators to modernise the ports in Durban and Cape Town.
